Philosophy of Teaching

Paul Spencer
As an educator I believe that it is important that students are provided an education that supports the development and growth of a learner. A great teacher can show someone the importance of education and its processes by creating an understanding of how it is used in the real world. Many of our students may not become the scientists or mathematicians that we want them to be, but rather they may have other ambitions that we should support and encourage. In my classes I will engage students in the discovery learning and critical thinking that will develop skills they can use in many different applications.

Social growth is something that I want all of my students to develop. Students need to learn how to work with others and be part of a community. In my class I want students to encourage each other to do better, to support each other as growing individuals, and to help each other succeed with them. Students should maintain their individual identities and bring them together as a group. “I am confident there is a cause for everyone. Think of how you can contribute; we all have different skills.”

Finally, as a teacher I believe that it is important that I am able to develop myself. Using self reflection as a tool to look at how you can improve is crucial to becoming a more effective teacher. As well as self reflection, we can seek guidance from others with experience. Just as I want my students to practice the skill of working together, being part of a community and working with colleagues to better myself as a teacher is something that I value. A good teacher should always understand that they are still a learner, someone once told me "the day you think you know everything is the day you stop learning".
